The £7.8 million deal will ensure Serco delivers the maintenance and logistics services for EJ200 engines, which power the RAF’s Typhoon aircraft.

Previously subcontracted through Rolls-Royce, Serco will now deliver services directly to the RAF, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner in military aviation.

The contract sustains employment across two RAF bases, with maintenance teams operating from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and RAF Lossiemouth in Moray. Twenty highly skilled technician posts and six logistics roles continue supporting the Typhoon fleet’s operational requirements.

Sid Hallam, DE&S EJ200 Operations Manager, said: “This contract will ensure operational readiness of our Typhoon fleet, ensuring our Royal Air Force continues to have the reliable, mission-essential engine support needed to defend UK airspace and fulfil our NATO commitments.”

The Typhoon fleet forms a cornerstone of UK air defence, providing rapid response capabilities and contributing to international security operations.

Reliable engine maintenance ensures these aircraft remain mission-ready whilst supporting the government’s commitment to national security outlined in its Plan for Change.

Serco’s Managing Director of Defence, Doug Umbers, said: “The award of this contract is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our engineering teams, and a strategic step forward as we continue to strengthen our capabilities in maintenance and logistics. I’d like to personally thank everyone involved in the bid process whose hard work has made this possible. We’re excited about the future of this contract and the opportunity to deliver an exceptional service to the MoD.”

The contract highlights Serco’s commitment to delivering high-quality support to the UK’s defence infrastructure and reflects the company’s broader ambition to expand its footprint in aviation engineering.

Since entering service in 2003 the RAF Typhoon has been the backbone of combat air defence for the UK. Typhoon covers a full spectrum of air operations including air policing, peace support and high-intensity conflict. They play a key role in the UK’s Quick Reaction Alert Fleet, which defends British and Falkland Islands airspace.
