GMV UK strengthens space safety

GMV UK has taken a decisive step forward in the field of space safety with the development and implementation of an advanced collision avoidance capability for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations.

This new service, which enhances GMV’s global space capabilities, has been key in securing new business with the Space Data Association (SDA), an international organisation dedicated to promoting safe and sustainable space operations.

The technology has been developed in the United Kingdom under the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ARTES programme, with co-funding and strategic support from the UK Space Agency. By combining internal investment with both European and national support mechanisms, GMV’s UK subsidiary has successfully designed, developed, and deployed a robust, scalable and highly reliable solution that strengthens space safety and operational resilience for LEO constellations.

Mark Dumville, Chief Executive Officer at GMV’s UK subsidiary, said: “Our work on LEO collision avoidance reflects GMV UK’s commitment to advancing space safety through innovation and through partnership.”

This new capability has played a pivotal role in GMV being awarded the contract to develop the Space Data Association’s next-generation flight safety system, the Space Safety Portal (SSP) — a platform designed to support current and future space mission operations. The SSP will be an agile and versatile system, enabling new capabilities and enhanced collaboration among satellite operators, space situational awareness (SSA) data providers, and international agencies, reinforcing SDA’s role as a global hub for Space Traffic Coordination (STC).

“The SSP project exemplifies GMV’s strategic vision to integrate innovation, operational excellence and international collaboration in space safety,” commented Felipe Jiménez, Head of Commercial Flight Dynamics Division at GMV, highlighting the GMV’s unified approach across its global subsidiaries.

The SDA is an international not-for-profit organisation that brings together satellite operators worldwide to promote the controlled, reliable and secure exchange of critical flight safety data, thereby helping to preserve the integrity of the space environment. With more than 16 years of operational experience, the new SSP will leverage emerging technologies, advanced SSA data and Space Traffic Coordination concepts to effectively address the challenges posed by the rapid increase in satellites in orbit and the growing number of scheduled launches in the coming years.
