The launch marks a significant step forward in innovative climate data and insights for aviation, empowering the industry to make safe and efficient decisions.
MAVIS is a comprehensive platform designed to meet the evolving needs of aviation users by providing unrivalled, personal weather visualisations in one place.
Powered by the Met Office’s new cloud-based supercomputing capability, it brings together four existing services, Aviation Briefing Service, Network Weather Resilience, HeliBrief and Open Runway, into a single, intuitive interface.
Designed for a broad spectrum of users, MAVIS reflects the Met Office’s commitment to simplifying access to weather data and supporting customer-driven innovation. It forms part of a wider strategy to deliver purposeful data and insights that enable safer, more efficient operations and support sustainable industry growth in a changing climate. MAVIS will evolve based on user feedback, ensuring a tool tailored to the needs of the industry.
MAVIS will continue to provide the regulated (free of charge) services that UK aviation users rely on, ensuring continuity for balloonists, glider pilots, emergency helicopter crews, airlines and airport operators. In addition, enhanced commercial options will offer advanced capabilities such as bespoke forecasting and interactive visualisation tools.
This flexible model ensures MAVIS can support a wide range of operations, from local flying clubs to major airports, helping users make informed decisions with confidence.
Lauren Donohue, Aviation Business Manager at the Met Office, said: “MAVIS represents a significant step forward in how we support aviation decision-making. By consolidating our services into one platform and listening closely to user feedback, we’re delivering a tool that’s not only more efficient but also more intuitive.
"The beta phase is a vital opportunity for users to explore MAVIS and help shape its future. MAVIS will continue to evolve and we welcome input to help us shape a resource that truly supports the needs of the sector”
Legacy aviation services are scheduled to be retired in Spring 2026 and users are encouraged to engage with MAVIS during the beta phase to ensure a smooth transition.
