As defence spending continues to rise across the UK, manufacturers throughout the supply chain are placing greater emphasis on compliance, resilience and long-term capability. For many engineering businesses, recognised accreditation is becoming an increasingly important way to demonstrate their readiness to support defence and aerospace programmes.

One company responding to this shift is Micro Spring & Presswork (MSP), the Redditch based precision component manufacturer, which has recently achieved JOSCAR accreditation.

Founded in 1964, MSP has supported the defence sector for decades through the supply of precision springs, stampings and wireforms for critical applications. Its long-standing experience in highly demanding industries underpins its continued work with customers in defence and aerospace.

How the supplier qualification system works

JOSCAR, the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register, is used across the defence, aerospace and security sectors as a supplier qualification system. It assesses businesses in a range of operational and governance areas, including quality management, financial stability, ethical standards, health and safety and environmental performance.

The system is widely recognised across the industry and is increasingly seen as an important benchmark for manufacturers looking to work within defence related supply chains.

For MSP, the accreditation reflects both the company’s established manufacturing standards and its wider ambitions within the sector. The business has seen growing opportunities linked to increased defence investment and a renewed focus on strengthening domestic manufacturing capability.

According to MSP’s Business Development Manager, Neil Smith, the accreditation comes at an important time for UK industry: “Achieving JOSCAR accreditation is a really positive step for MSP, particularly with the increase in defence spending and our involvement with Make UK Defence. It strengthens our visibility within the sector and supports future growth opportunities.”

Operating from its Redditch facility, MSP supplies precision springs, stampings and wireforms to customers across a range of technically demanding industries where repeatability, quality and reliability are essential.

Why supplier assurance is becoming increasingly important

As expectations placed on suppliers continue to increase, manufacturers are being asked to demonstrate not only technical expertise but also robust operational processes and clear supply chain transparency. In sectors such as defence and aerospace, supplier assurance has become especially important as OEMs and Tier 1 contractors seek dependable long term manufacturing partners.

The growing emphasis on UK based sourcing has also created opportunities for specialist manufacturers able to support complex applications with shorter lead times and closer collaboration. Industry bodies such as Make UK Defence have continued to highlight the importance of strengthening British manufacturing capability as investment across the sector grows. For small and medium sized engineering businesses, accreditations such as JOSCAR can improve visibility and accessibility within procurement networks that are often highly regulated.

For procurement teams, the system can also simplify elements of supplier onboarding by reducing duplication in qualification processes. This can help manufacturers engage more efficiently with customers already using JOSCAR.

While many manufacturers continue to face challenges linked to costs, skills and global supply chain pressures, investment across the defence sector is expected to remain strong in the years ahead. As a result, businesses that can demonstrate compliance, dependability and specialist engineering expertise are likely to be well placed for future growth.

MSP believes the accreditation will support further opportunities in defence and aerospace applications, particularly where component performance, traceability and manufacturing consistency are critical. Achieving JOSCAR accreditation marks another step in MSP’s continued development within high specification manufacturing sectors and reinforces the growing role of UK engineering companies within the wider defence supply chain
