Serco secures Asia Pacific defence contracts

Serco has reinforced its position in Asia Pacific with contract wins and extensions in the defence sector in Australia, including a successful rebid of the HMAS Watson Navy Synthetic Warfare Training contract for the Royal Australian Navy.

The total contract value is more than £80 million (over AUD$160m) if all extensions are exercised. The initial five-year term has five, one-year extension options. At Watson in Sydney, Serco has trained Maritime Warfare Officers since 2012, delivering high-quality simulator-based maritime warfare training and related support services.

Separately, Serco has been awarded a contract extension to provide in-service support of Mini Typhoon, Typhoon and Toplite (MTTT) systems to the Royal Australian Navy. The contract is worth around £5 million (c.AUD$10m) over three years, with an option to extend for a further two years.

“As governments increase spending on defence and national security, I am proud of the role Serco plays in supporting the defence of nations and citizens. 

“These contract awards build on our recent strong momentum in defence, with the sector comprising around two-thirds of our order intake in 2025.”

These contracts follow other defence contracts in last 12 months, including:

  • Three contracts with a combined value of over £1 billion to provide Maritime Services to the Royal Navy
  • A 10 year contract worth up to £1.5 billion if all options are exercised, to run the Armed Forces Recruitment Service for all UK military personnel.
  • A 25-year, CAN$490 million (GBP £266m) contract to support the Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) programme for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). 
  • A new indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract to continue supporting the US Navy’s Submarine High Data Rate (SubHDR) antenna systems. The single-award contract vehicle has a ceiling value of US$97 million (£72m).
  • A US$105 million (£80m), five-year contract to provide support to the US Navy’s amphibious warfare ships and systems.
  • A US$96 million (£75m) contract to provide technical services to modernise the US Navy’s guided missile frigates and ship systems.
