LionStrike says it could build British Army LMV base vehicles in 10 production days

GM’s manufacturing scale underpins a bid promising rapid production, while UK companies would deliver military integration and long-term fleet support.

Team LionStrike says it could manufacture the full quantity of base vehicles for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) requirement in just 10 production days, drawing on General Motors’ automotive production capacity before completing military integration in the UK.

The consortium of NP Aerospace, GM Defense and BAE Systems is pitching an approach that combines established commercial vehicles with domestic engineering and support. It says its UK integration and support strategy would create or sustain thousands of jobs.

Its proposal is among seven progressing through the competition to replace ageing Land Rover and Pinzgauer fleets. In an update published on 21 October, the MoD confirmed an initial tranche of around 3,000 vehicles, with scope to expand beyond 9,500. Deliveries are anticipated to begin in 2027.

How LionStrike plans to accelerate LMV delivery

Speaking to Advance, Team LionStrike said the scale of GM’s existing manufacturing operations offered a route to rapid production without developing a new vehicle from scratch.

“We can produce the full quantity of LMV base platforms in 10 production days,” a LionStrike spokesperson said. “A single GM plant produces more than 1,000 pickup trucks per day, and the vehicles would be shipped ready to integrate.”

That claim covers base-platform production. Shipping, military integration and the MoD’s acceptance process would still be required before vehicles could enter operational service.

LionStrike says UK militarisation would take days rather than weeks, with mission modules manufactured ahead of time where appropriate. The final delivery schedule would depend on the contract and required configuration.

“The base vehicle is a mature, unmodified commercial platform,” the spokesperson said. “The UK work is focused on modular militarisation and integration rather than redesigning the underlying vehicle.”

The consortium points to combined annual Chevrolet Silverado and Colorado sales exceeding half a million vehicles as evidence of production depth, continuing product development and long-term manufacturer support.

Where UK suppliers would fit into the programme

Base vehicles would be produced overseas, while the UK would retain responsibility for design authority, military integration and through-life support.

NP Aerospace, appointed LionStrike’s prime contractor in September, would work alongside BAE Systems and GM Defense to deliver the programme.

LionStrike identifies the West Midlands and South Yorkshire as centres for UK activity, supported by suppliers providing specialist engineering, mission-system integration, manufacturing and maintenance.

The team says its strategy would create or sustain thousands of UK jobs, aligning with the MoD’s Land Industrial Strategy and social value requirements. However, the detailed economic model, including the UK share of programme spending and number of SME opportunities, remains under development.

For suppliers, the opportunity would therefore extend beyond initial vehicle deliveries into the engineering and support needed to keep the fleet operational.

UK fleet support with continuing GM dependencies

LionStrike says the UK would hold the design authority, integration capability and in-service support functions needed to undertake routine maintenance, upgrades and through-life engineering domestically.

However, it acknowledges continuing dependence on GM for the base-vehicle supply chain, technical data, warranty support and access to future product developments.

“Our objective is maximum UK control of the fleet while retaining the assurance that comes from direct OEM backing,” the team said.

Its approach to affordability and survivability centres on modular military equipment, allowing vehicles to accommodate changing missions and threats while limiting redesign of the underlying platform.

British Army LMV trials will test the proposition

The next phase of the LMV competition will put those industrial promises alongside practical assessments of vehicle capability.

The MoD says each of the seven bidders will provide three variants, creating a 21-vehicle assessment programme running alongside the formal tender process.

LionStrike says it will demonstrate mobility, reliability, crew ergonomics, safety, mission-equipment integration and maintainability in the required configuration.

Those trials will help establish whether the advantages of high-volume automotive production translate into vehicles that meet military requirements and can be supported throughout their service lives.
