Chess Dynamics secures £3m contract with PT Len

Under a follow-on order contract with Indonesia's PT Len, Chess Dynamics will supply its SeaEagle Fire Control Electro-Optical (FCEO) systems for two Indonesian Navy Bung Tomo-class multi-role light frigates (MRLF), as part of a planned three-ship modernisation programme.

Chess Dynamics has secured a contract worth approximately £3 million with Indonesian state-owned defence and electronics company PT Len for the supply of its SeaEagle Fire Control Electro-Optical (FCEO) systems for two Indonesian Navy Bung Tomo-class multirole light frigates (MRLF).

The contract builds on an existing programme between Chess Dynamics and PT Len, which began with an initial order for the first Bung Tomo-class vessel in 2023. The latest order covers ships two and three, completing the planned class-wide upgrade with SeaEagle FCEO systems.

The Bung Tomo-class multi-role frigates entered service in the early 2000s and are undergoing refurbishment to extend their operational life and maintain combat effectiveness. Chess’ SeaEagle FCEO systems will replace legacy electro-optical fire control equipment, providing a modern capability designed to integrate with the vessels’ existing 76 mm OTO Melara naval guns and interface with the upgraded Thales TACTICOS Combat Management System.

How technology integration effectively extends the life of naval vessels

Andy Smith, Managing Director of Chess Dynamics, said: “This follow-on contract reflects the confidence placed in Chess following our work in Indonesia to date. Being selected for ships two and three of the Bung Tomo-class upgrade programme builds on our relationship with PT Len and is an important next step in our long-term commitment to Indonesia and the wider region.

“Naval modernisation is not always about replacing entire platforms. There is considerable value in extending the operational life of existing vessels by integrating current, proven technology and our SeaEagle FCEO systems can enable navies to upgrade their existing platforms with modern electro-optical fire control capability.”

Part of the Cohort Group, Chess Dynamics has an established presence in Indonesia, following the successful installation of its SeaEagle FCEO systems on Indonesian Navy KCR-60 vessels as part of the combat systems delivered and integrated by Terma. This contract forms part of the company’s increasing focus on supporting navies across Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Chess Dynamics has supported naval programmes in Southeast Asia for more than 15 years, including programmes in Thailand and Malaysia, while in Australia, Chess has an established partnership with Owen International to support the local maintenance, repair and upgrade capability of the SeaEagle family. Over 150 SeaEagle FCEO systems have been delivered worldwide with Chess Dynamics technology in – or entering – service with 12 international navies.
