BMT to develop design of Canada's Joint Support Ship

BMT Fleet Technology Ltd - a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd - has been awarded a 12-month, $9.8m design project, to further develop the Contract Design as one possible option for the Canadian Forces' (CF) new Joint Support Ship (JSS).

Following on from BMT Fleet Technology’s successful completion of the JSS Preliminary Design, the award of JSS Contract Design is a significant milestone in nearly a decade of close cooperation with the JSS Project Office.

The Joint Support Ship (JSS) project is a Government of Canada capital acquisition project to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s ageing Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) ships.  Canada's current procurement strategy includes the assessment/evaluation of two design options: a bespoke design developed by BMT Fleet Technology and an existing, off-the-shelf design of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems’ Berlin Class.

BMT Fleet Technology of Ottawa, Ontario has been supporting the JSS project since December 2002 through a series of individual taskings issued under an Engineering, Logistics, and Management Support (ELMS) Services Contract. These taskings have included a broad range of engineering and design studies analysing and addressing such areas as system requirements, Naval Ship rules, concept design, ship performance modeling, general arrangements and layouts, pollution control, crewing concepts, system operations, ship sub-systems design, in service support concepts and through life cost analyses.

Dr Gordon Fleming President of BMT Fleet Technology commented: “The award of JSS Contract Design to BMT underscores the Royal Canadian Navy’s confidence in our abilities to successfully manage and execute a design project of this magnitude and importance.

“We intend to deliver a world-class solution for JSS and have been aggressively growing and strengthening our Canadian design team to achieve this. BMT Fleet Technology will also capitalise on the expertise, capabilities and synergies available across the BMT group. The JSS project will draw on Naval Architects, Structural Engineers, Marine Systems Engineers and Combat Systems Engineers from all four of BMT Fleet Technology’s offices in Canada, as well as sister BMT companies.”

BMT Fleet Technology provides through-life engineering support from concept development through design, construction, operations, in-service support (ISS) and disposal for the defence, marine, energy and transport industry sectors. The company's proven expertise covers naval architecture and marine engineering, large project technical support, environmental and cold regions engineering, structural and mechanical system surveys, damage assessment, materials and welding engineering, inspection and maintenance management, and integrated logistics support.

The company's deep understanding of Naval operations and technology and independence from equipment suppliers, shipyards and combat system integrators, has led to a recognised and preferred position as a 'Tier 0' contractor, directly supporting the Royal Canadian Navy’s Project Offices for the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).
